Happy Birthday International Wota

It is safe to say the transition from Feed of Pop to International Wota has been a success.

I try to keep things light here on TLS, but I think it is appropriate to look at this subject a little differently, especially on this day. Because even if it is just a little corner of the interwebs, it is our corner! I’ll try to do this without sounding too ridiculous.

I was a reader of Feed of Pop, so when that combusted I saw the beginning of Intlwota. As I watched the community of Intlwota grow and grow, I remained a reader. Even though it seemed as if it was a relatively tight-knit group, Intlwota was very much all-inclusive. Many people have come along and turned into active members of the community out of essentially nowhere. This is actually one of the reasons that motivated me to start True Life Seek on livejournal last November (the other reason: the general hope to improve upon expressing an opinion).

So what was so great about Intlwota that made me want to join it? Let’s not pretend here. I was hoping to be noticed by Ray. Even with all the contributors and members that Intlwota amassed, to me it was Ray’s community. It wasn’t until I got involved with Intlwota and had conversations with Ray that I realized this was the wrong way of looking at the community. Ray is the owner and director of Intlwota, but there is no substance without the contributions of everyone else. Those that participate on the site itself and all the bloggers covered make up Intlwota.

The benefits of Intlwota are pretty obvious. For the reader, it is a lot easier to keep to track of all the different blogs. For the blogger, it is easy promotion. In fact, new blogs can now get an instant audience through Intlwota. The only promotion TLS gets is on Intlwota, although that was planned.

Intlwota is also a gathering of people from all different backgrounds and viewpoints. This is incredibly important for there to be an exchange of ideas on Intlwota, one of the most important features of the community. If everyone came from the same place and agreed with each other, it’d be a very boring world. I find that there are many blogs which cover topics, Johnny’s for example, that I have very little interest in. But I have an appreciation of argument and logic, which can be found regardless of subject matter and, surprisingly, writing style.

At the same time, I wouldn’t say that Intlwota is revolutionary or that any of us bloggers are necessarily experts in the field. Again, it is just our corner of the Internet. I actually am more fond of the community looking at it through that perspective.

I hope Intlwota keeps expanding and bringing in new bloggers while still maintaining the interaction and bonds between the current blogs. I like that now I can now help the cause since I’ve become a contributor to the site. I’m definitely glad that I got involved with Intlwota over the past year and am looking forward to see where it goes from here.

The only thing I would add to this is that the scope of IW is understated. Though not revolutionary, some of the concepts are. It is also a bridge between cultures and a rare forum in which no contributor is judged, and no contribution unnoticed, no matter how small or obscure. It is a great time to be alive.
